Korean War

The Korean War

The Korean war started in June 1950 and was between north and south Korea. The war stopped in 1953 but during this time over 2 million Koreans died. The north was communists and the south was nationalists. Both sides were being helped as China and the USSR helped the north and the UN helped the south. North and South Korea are still at war but have agreed to no longer fight although both are still prepared to fight if it is ever necessary. during the war North Korea was being led by Kim ll-Sung and the south was being led by Syngman Rhee. The war began because after world war two Korea was split up in to North and South. because the North became communists, it worried the South as they were being helped by the US who were very against communism.

Goryeo

Goryeo

Goryeo was founded by Jumong in 37BC. By now China had been taken over by the Jurchen who frequently tried to invade and fight the Koreans. they were defeated by the Mongols who took over china and invaded Korea in 1231. in 1258 the royal family of Goryeo surrendered to the mongrols who allowed them to continue ruling as long as they followed their orders. during the 13th century Korea was over taken by Chinese philosophy and neo Confucianism. the book the history of the three kingdoms was written by Kim Bu Sik in 1392. the king ordered his general Yi Seong Gye to lead an army against china. however the general took charge of the army and turned them on to the king himself and then became king of Goryeo.

Korea

How korea started out

No one can date back to when civilisation firsrt came to Korea. however there are records that there were stoneage farmers living there in 4000 BC. From 57BC to 18BC Korea was being split up into three kingdoms, Silla, Goguryeo and Baekje.

Silla was founded in 57 BC by Bak Hyeokgeose. The same as the other two kingdoms Silla was highly influenced by china and their way of life. in 4 AD  Silla was had a high population count. to decide who would get the throne Silla created a council who would have the power to choose. This council was created up of nobles who had previously been to the university of Confucian classics. as they have in China. Buddhist temples were being built in 4 AD as the religion came into Korea. in 8 AD the council couldn't agree on who should be the next leader to take the throne. because of this the people in the running for the throne began to break away from society and form their own mini states. they called themselves warlords. In 918AD warlord Wang Geon became the ruler of Silla. he had previously formed Goryeo.

Khan Project Office

Khan Project Office

The Khan Project Office is situated in Seoul. it was designed by the company  for the company as a way to inspire them and help them with creativity. the office is completely white with windows either side of the room. The only other colour is the wooden desktops and chair legs. The staff are made to wear doctors gowns and walk in the laboratory style office barefooted . The design director Mr Han wanted his staff to fix space like doctors cure people. he believes the office is convenient and comfortable.

I personally believe that this office would be near on impossible to work in as it would trigger headaches and strain your eyes trying to focus on anything. I like the idea of walking around the work place barefooted as it will make you feel as if you are at home however it may be the start of germ spreading ad isn't hygienic. If I was working in this office I would dread going in it looks depressing. In my designs I think I will stay away from using just one colour everywhere after seeing this outcome.

Raw Hwang

Raw Hwang

Raw Hwang is a Korean woman who moved to New York to pursue her career in art. Raw Hwang specialises in wall sculptures. She does this by pinning buttons and beads on to a wall in a mass to create a picture. pictures she has done so far include birds, trees and chandeliers. Her art in influenced by Buddhist theories and she believes that people need to be able to empty their minds to be able to get enlightenment and fulfilment from her art.

I believe that Raw Hwang's wall art is beautiful. How she uses pinned buttons to make a picture seems so simple but creates something that look so amazing. Allong with her wall art she adds simple features to create more of a statement such as the cage around the bird and the light behind the chandelier. From far away they look like a full painting but when u get up close you can see the texture that the beads and buttons ad making the art seem more real.

Suh Yongsun

Suh Yongsun is a painter and sculptor. He lived in Seoul, South Korea since he was born in 1951. He now owns a studio in Gyeonggido. Suh Yongsun mainly paints the human existence trying to capture the human form. He did this mainly through self portraits, these pictures were based on how he saw himself as an artist rather than a perfect portrait of how he appears. From 1975 to 1982 Suh Yongsun studied at Seoul National University doing fine arts. A few years after he graduated he became the professor at the college of Fine Arts, this was from 1986 to 2008. When Suh Yongsun retired he was given a solo show at the National Museum of Contemporary art, in South Korea. This was to celebrate his award for artist of the year that he was given in 2009.

In my oppinion Suh Yongsun is an unusual artist. his use of very basic block colours make the paintings seem harsh. However i think that his paintings can make your emotions change to how he is wanting you to feel as you look at them.

102 Incheon Tower

The 102 Incheon Tower is situated in Songdo International City, Incheon, South Korea. It started being built 20th June 2008and is scheduled to b e finished in 2015. The building consists of two towers both having 102 floors the building will take up 2.3 square miles and be as high as 1, 598 ft. The first design was going to be 601 m high but due to the recession a new design made the building 487m but with an identical building. When the building is finished it will be the tallest twin towers in the world. It will consist on offices, residential floors and hotel and restaurants. It is hoped to be seen as a Korean landmark. The main developer is Portman Holdings and the building development is to be run by John Portman.

On personal opinion I believe the 102 Incheon Tower to look amazing. it is modern and stylish. It will enable more jobs and offer more space for people to work and live. As it being the tallest twin towers I believe it will be an building that people will think of when thinking about south Korea and a strong part of south Korea's tourism as people will come around the world to see the tallest twin towers just as they did in New York. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Songdo_Incheon_Towers
